How Often Should You Clean Your HVAC System?
It should be abundantly clear that homeowners must hire a licensed, professional HVAC service to come and perform regular maintenance, cleaning, and inspections of a heating and AC system. This needs to be done at least once a year, as it will take care of issues like dust building up on the coil and will ensure the system runs as smoothly as possible. That being said, what about the other aspects of an HVAC system like cleaning the filters, etc, should you take care of it, or is it best to call a professional?
Filter Cleaning and Replacement
Some air filters are reusable, meaning all you have to do is take it out and clean it on a regular basis. Just make sure that you first check the manufacturer’s instructions for scheduled cleaning or replacement.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s report notes you should clean your filters every month or 2 during the summer, and even more, frequent changes are required if you use the AC more often, and it is in a dusty environment. If your system uses disposable filters, follow the instructions with regards to when you should swap them out, and make a note in your calendar.
Duct Cleaning
Duct cleaning can be a dirty, serious business and is best left to a licensed professional to take care of, to ensure it is done properly, which in return will safeguard both the comfort and health of your family. A recent report by The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Indoor Air Quality doesn’t officially make any recommendations on how often you need to clean air ducts, due to scientific knowledge still being in its early stages. This is a judgment call on your part, so consult with an HVAC professional.
